Dr. Mercy Nabwire’s May 08 University of Nairobi Public Lecture Dedicated to Zarina Patel And The Legacy of Makhan Singh

Makhan Singh taught us that workers’ liberation is inseparable from national liberation. Today, Kenyan workers remain trapped in global supply chains and domestic systems that exclude and exploit. Over 80% of our workforce is labeled ‘informal,’ a term that denies them rights, voice, and dignity. We must reject that logic. We must organize across gender, class, and borders not for nostalgia, but for power. If our unions will not challenge capital, we must challenge our unions. Because the future will not be handed to us, it must be organized by workers, for workers, and with workers.
